About Boxing Training with Nick
as described by Rick Florino -a client, writer& friend
Nick's Boxing Training  provides more than just physical training. It's an immersing conditioning
experience that leads students to achieve their fitness goals, while having fun in the process.
Master trainer and Nick's Boxing Training CEO "Nick" Nicholson tailors his instruction to each
student's skill level in one-on-one sessions. He specializes in boxing, but he doesn't teach the
sport in a standard fashion. His unique method allows students to learn how to truly defend
themselves, while attaining optimal physical form. A seasoned veteran, Nick's funny, charismatic
and encouraging. Even though boxing is his forte, he can train clients for any sport and push
them to realize their potential at any age.
Nick describes his sessions best. "My teaching style is fun, exciting and fresh. It just depends on if
I'm doing a one-on-one session or a class, but either one that I do, I always try to make sure it's a
lot of fun for the student. What I teach is something that a person could use if they needed to. I
always say, 'It's better to know it and not need it, than to need it and not know it.'" Subscribing to
that age-old adage, the skills taught are useful for both self-defense and standard conditioning.
Nick comes from a diverse background, and that contributes to his method. He's worked in
everything from mental health counseling to training, and his certifications include the National
Academy of Sports Medicine, International Sports Sciences Association and Aerobics & Fitness
Association of America. Plus, his personal story proves that anyone can start boxing at any age.
"I was actually an adult when I started boxing," he explains. "I was watching TV one day with a
friend of mine, and I saw two guys boxing. I said, 'They look like tomato cans. These guys are top
ten in the world? I could fight that well.' So he said, 'If you can, I'll teach you.' So we got in his
backyard and started working the bag. I started working out with some of the camps that came to
the Top Level Gym, where I used to work out in Phoenix, Arizona. I worked out with Tommy
Hearns's camp and Sugar Ray Leonard's camp. At the time, I was 28-years-old. I never fought as
an amateur. I just turned pro. I got in the ring with a guy named Lindell Holmes. We sparred, and
he knocked me down. I had one more round for him though."
Nick has one more round for everyone, and he emphasizes endurance to each one of his
students. He trains students to conserve the energy in order to last as long as a fight or session
takes. Nick's the real deal because he's been in the ring. He had three professional fights,
including an epic battle with Jim MacDonald. Now, he focuses on imparting his knowledge onto
anyone, anywhere. He also shows that boxing is the perfect fitness solution. "It's the best core
workout that there is. There is no better workout for the core than to box. I justify that by saying,
'Have you ever seen a fat boxer?'"
Plus, Nick is mobile. "I'm mobile. I'm taking fitness to you-to the office, to the park. Whatever's
convenient for the student, I make it convenient for me. People make fitness a way of life in Los
Angeles, and I cater to that." He most certainly does, and he can prepare his clients for anything
in the ring and beyond.
